■略歴
2006年、フロリダ国際大学人比較社会学大学院プログラム博士課程修了。博士（比較社会学）。フロリダ国際大学人類学・社会学部講師、ノヴァ・サウスイースタン大学客員助教授を経て、2009年4月より現職、関西学院大学先端社会研究所専任研究員。2010年4月より、同大学社会学部講師。
■研究分野
植民地主義とアイデンティティ、旧植民地社会における多文化間の紛争・混交・共生、多文化・多人種社会の統合とナショナリズム、移民のアイデンティティの多重性と社会資本形成、これらそれぞれの問題における宗教の影響、人種・エスニシティとセクシュアリティの相互作用など。
■研究課題
これまでの研究は、理論的、方法論的に相互に補完しあう２つの枠組、「エスニシティとナショナリズム」と「移民と宗教」に大別できる。
１．エスニシティとナショナリズム
博士論文では、トリニダッド・トバゴ（1962年独立の旧英領独立国）でのフィールドワークと補完的な歴史分析を通して、植民地期以来、社会を特徴付けてきた人種・エスニシティ、宗教による社会区分、階層と社会統合の関係を人類学的に考察した。エスニシティの政治化（Politicization of Ethnicity）やグループ間の資源競争（Resource Competition）に主眼が置かれる既存の研究に対して、文化を政治や経済の単なる反映とせず、エスニシティそのものを文化（Culture of Ethnicity）として捉えなおしてグループ間関係と社会統合を問い直した。現在は、
（１）博士論文から出版計画書（Book Prospectus）を作成すべくトリニダッドでの調査を継続する。特に、植民地期文書などの内容分析（Content analysis）を更に充実させる。
（２）トリニダッド･トバゴと歴史的、社会構造的特徴を共有する旧植民地社会（例えば、ガイアナ、フィジー、モーリシャス）との比較を通して、エスニシティとネーションを相互排他的に捉える既存の理論に対抗しうるアプローチの提示を試みる。
（３）文化混交の概念、CreolizationやHybridizationを批判的検討に貢献する。具体的には、これらの概念が特有の背景とその政治性から切離されて｢流用｣される傾向に対して、具体的な事例の民族誌を通して、再コンテキスト化、再歴史化を試みていく。
その度は最悪です。
２．「移動」と宗教
フロリダ南部にある旧英領カリブ諸国（特に、ジャマイカとトリニダッド･トバゴ）出身の移民を多く抱える教会でのフィールドワークを通して、彼らの宗教がどのように彼らの市民参加（Civic Engagement）と社会資本（Social Capital）の形成・維持・拡大に影響しているかという問いを中心に調査してきた。現在は、カリブに居住する(東)インド系移民とその子孫の経験から、「宗教が移民のアイデンティティ形成と維持にいかなる影響を与えているか」、「宗教は、移民の同化と他のグループとの関係にどのような影響を及ぼしているか」、また、逆に、「移民にまつわる体験が彼らの宗教教義、儀礼にどのように影響しているか」等の問いに答え、より一般的な宗教とアイデンティティについての議論に貢献することを目指している。
